Allan was a career Crime Scene Investigator for 26 years. He began his career in Glasgow working for Strathclyde Police before embarking on a successful career with South Yorkshire Police and Bedfordshire Police before becoming Head of CSI and Forensic Quality Assurance Manager with Merseyside Police, one of the largest police forces in the United Kingdom.

Since his retirement at the end of 2002, he has been a consultant and in 2004 was appointed a lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, School of Forensic and Investigative Sciences. Both roles have seen him teach, lecture and undertake consultancy in various places around the world. His areas of expertise are crime scene investigation, crime scene management and evidence management.

 He has recently been engaged on monitoring work, on behalf of the European Commission, in respect of forensic institutions in candidate states. In 2010 he established The Evidence Partnership Limited which specialises in evidence management and is currently leading a collaborative work on the use of Object Connected Technologies to track and record exhibits from “crime scene to court”.

John Haugh

John Haugh is one of the worlds most experienced Fume Filtration and Forensic Laboratory Specialists. During his 30 year career John has held senior management roles and directorships at many internationally recognised corporations.

Using a combination of cutting edge computer aided design techniques, and a wealth of award winning experience, John has been responsible for designing some of the world’s most commonly used ranges of Ductless Fume Cupboards, Downdraft Tables, Document Examination Benches, Downflow Workstations, Forensic Evidence Drying Cabinets and Superglue (CA) Chamber.

John is now working as a private consultant to some of the world’s leading fume filtration manufacturers – designing bespoke products and supervising manufacturing & sales.

Sue Carney
Forensic Scientist & Consultant


Sue Carney is a forensic scientist with ten years experience at The Forensic Science Service Chorley laboratory, where she was a senior forensic scientist and site quality lead for body fluids. Her areas of expertise include body fluids, DNA interpretation and specialist low template DNA techniques. Sue has given expert testimony at crown court on many occasions and has accrued a wealth of experience in the reporting of complex casework. Sexual offences and cold case reviews remain her area of special interest and she has appeared on Granada Reports and BBC Radio Lancashire Breakfast to discuss these. Sue welcomes forensic biology casework consultation for prosecution or defence. 

Sue has extensive experience of the forensic training of both practitioners and investigators. She has frequently tutored on FSS in-house training courses,  including technical and expert witness training, and taught police, medical and legal personnel on various courses including aspects of forensic strategy setting, sexual offences investigation, DNA profiling and NPIA’s specially trained officers development program and crime scene managers’ courses. She offers forensic training in these areas and bespoke forensic awareness courses.

As a a BSI-trained internal auditor and quality systems expert, Sue has detailed experience of UKAS assessment visits and quality monitoring. She offers quality systems consultation to ISO 17025, bespoke quality investigations, systems audits and quality manual writing.

Andy Williams
Forensic expert and Consultant


Andy has a unique skill set combining operational forensic experience, an understanding of the commercial development of the forensic market in the UK together with account management, business development and project management skills.

He has successfully delivered two international projects delivering quality management systems, DNA Databases integrated into Policing practices together with required legislative changes. His second project included a full laboratory build including equipment procurement and enhanced training in fingerprint enhancement, fraud investigation, gun-shot residue analysis and drug databases.

As Project Group Manager within the Forensic Science Service he led on the development of a number of value enhancing services aligned to the requirements of the most serious crimes including Sexual Offences Service and a Critical and Major Incident Service.

Most recently he managed a Transformation project in the Violent Crime area delivering significant improvements in processes through the deployment of lean stigma design tools and organisational re-design.

Formerly a forensic scientist with the Forensic Science Service, where he worked for almost 25 years, he is now pursuing a career as an independent forensic consultant.

Phil Gilhooley 
Fingerprint Expert, Case Reviewer and Expert Witness
Senior Lecturer, Forensic Science, Liverpool John Moores University

Phil has over forty years' experience in the identification of finger and palmar impressions and is trained and qualified to National Advanced Fingerprint standards. He  has knowledge of all national police databases and police case management systems.

Phil was previously the head of the Merseyside Police Fingerprint Bureau and is currently a senior lecturer in Forensic Science at Liverpool John Moores University.

During his career, Phil has been involved in numerous high profile trials both in the UK and abroad. He has also been instructed by solicitors in both murder and drugs trails. Now working as a forensic consultant, Phil specialises in fingerprint and palmar impressions. Phil is also an experienced expert witness and independent case reviewer.

Andrew Wade BSc MSc MAE
Forensic Consultant, Expert Witness, Fire and Explosion Investigation Expert


Andrew has a BSc in Applied Chemistry and a MSc in crystallography. He was also a Registered Forensic Practitioner and Speciality Assessor with the Council For Registered Practitioners until it's closure in 2009.

Since 1979, Andrew has been employed as a forensic scientist is both the public and private sectors. He formerly worked at the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory in London and the Fire Investigation Unit before becoming Crime Scene Manager for West Yorkshire Police.

Andrew is now a consultant and has been commissioned by police forces, lawyers, corporate and private clients. He specialises in fire and explosion investigations and has attended over a thousand fire scenes and other incidents and has trained forensic scientists,scenes of crime officers, and police and fire personnel in all aspects of forensic science. Andrew also specialises in the examination and comparison of may materials including glass, paint, footwear marks,tyre marks locks and tool marks.

Karen Wade Bsc Cchem MRSC MF S Soc

Karen has been employed as a forensic scientist since 1992. She has previously been employed as a Higher Scientific Officer with the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory and at the Forensic Science Service in Wetherby.Karen accepts commissions from police forces, lawyers, corporate and private clients.

Karen has expertise in a range of forensic evidence types including fire and explosion investigation, liquid fire accelerants, footware marks (including the chemical enhancement of footwear marks and footwear marks on bodies), glass, security dyes, drugs and other forensic chemistry evidence. David Thorne

Forensic Imagery Specialist


David is an ex UK police detective with over 15 years experience in the use of Video Evidence in the judicial system. 

He is able to use his knowledge and experience as an investigator to compliment his technical knowledge in the field of video evidence. This ensures that his clients are able to maximise their use of the material in their case preparation.

David now heads his own independent Forensic Imagery Analysis company and he prides himself in remaining impartial with his overriding duty to the court.

He is passionate about the use of any video material in investigations starting with the gathering process through analysis and finally court presentation.

David has provided his services to an array of clients for the most serious of crimes and has given evidence in court as an expert on both technical aspects of CCTV and Video material as well as imagery content. He has received commendations from Chief Constables and Judges for his work in this field.

He is a strong proponent of training and continues to campaign with senior officers to highlight the necessity of education in this field and to improve the quality of training provided to front line officers. He is a trainer for users of two software tools in the field of forensic video analysis and continues to explore new innovations in this field.
